COPY-EDITING

We provide a service tailored to your individual requirements and your document. Please let us know if your Publisher asked you to follow a specific style guide and if they have supplied it.

Apart from correcting errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, style and usage, and typographical errors (typos), our service will be tailored to the nature of your text and may include:

– Checking content and structure, including heading, sub-headings, footnotes or endnotes, glossary and bibliography.

– Checking sentence and paragraph length.

– Restructuring sentences and rewriting text, suggesting rephrasing to improve clarity.

– Checking consistency in spelling and hyphenation.

– Checking correspondence between chapter headings and table of contents.

– Checking referencing of illustrations and tables.

– Checking order and consistency of references.

– Checking style. We will check that exclamation marks and emphasis, in italic, bold or capitals are not over used. We will check consistency of verb tenses and changes between the first and the third person without a good reason. We will limit the use of passive. We will check the use of metaphors, figure of speech and jargon.

Please note that we will not provide a substantive restructuring, or rewriting of your text; reduce word counts; write/re-write students’ assignments.

PROOFREADING

We will compare the page proofs with the edited copy for consistency in usage and presentation, and accuracy in text, images and layout.

Although our proofreaders will not be responsible for copy-editing, they may advise you of problems and identify necessary changes.

Our service includes:

– Checking consistency of style, following a style guide, if supplied.

– Checking for omissions, inconsistencies and typographical errors (typos).

– Checking the table of contents against chapter and paragraph titles, page numbers, appendixes and other end matter.

– Checking page numbers and headings.

– Checking cross-references.

– Checking that footnotes and endnotes are correctly numbered and correspond with the text.

– Checking that illustrations, tables and captions correspond with each other and with the text.
